How do I get my content model JSON?
Space export (best). With the Contentful CLI:
contentful space export --space-id YOUR_SPACE_IDA full export includes entries and editor settings, which unlocks more checks: unused content types and fields, entry naming, unreferenced entries and help text. Add --skip-content if you would rather audit the model only.
Content Management API. Save the response of:
GET /spaces/YOUR_SPACE_ID/environments/master/content_types?limit=1000One content type. In the Contentful web app, open a content type and copy its JSON preview.
All three formats are accepted.
What the audit looks at
Naming and documentation
Recognizable, semantic names, consistent prefixes, camelCase field IDs, descriptions and help text.
Structure and reuse
Field counts, field sets copied between types, numbered fields, and entry titles that work.
Field types and validation
The right type for the data, required fields, character limits, and dropdowns that have outgrown themselves.
References and nesting
Typed links, nesting depth, and page wrappers that split one concept into two coupled entries.
Content vs presentation
Raw colors, pixel values and markup stored where content should be.
Localization
Content localized consistently, structure left alone, and no per-language fields.
Media
Alt text, an image content type, and file type and size limits on assets.
SEO and metadata
Safe slugs and dedicated SEO metadata on everything that becomes a page.
Complexity and maintainability
Model size, earlier versions left in place, and fields that are no longer active.
Entry naming and usage
With a full export: untitled or generic entry names, and component entries nothing references.
